2017Two Job Search Success Stories
Let’s face it – looking for work in this competitive environment can be tough. It tugs at your ego and self-esteem and sometimes you wonder if that job offer will ever come through. Here are two stories that should inspire you!
Donna is in her late 20’s and had worked in nonprofits for more than 6 years. Her last setting proved not to be the best fit and so she found herself looking for work. She had a great skillset for her target, development (fundraising), because she is the ultimate networker. After 1½ years of networking and giving it her all, she still found herself unemployed. Donna then decided to go back to the drawing board and decided to reevaluate her skillsets. Her new target was HR. She was able to land a summer internship in an HR function and rebranded herself on LinkedIn. Still networking, she met with a family friend who gave her a tip about an organization that was expanding their operations in South Jersey. After 4 months of interviewing, she has started as an HR Generalist.
Marcy’s story is even more compelling. Marcy (early 30’s) had a great work history in the publishing field. She wanted to move to the business side of the house, so she quit her job to study for an MBA in marketing. She successfully completed her studies only to find herself in the midst of the biggest recession (2009). Marcy used all of her know-how and networking skills, but still no job offers. She got some consulting offers and temporary assignments, but times were tough and she had to move out of her New York apartment. Incredibly after 4 years of searching she landed a plum of a job in international marketing.
What these two stories have in common is persistence and networking! Both of our job seekers could have just stopped looking, however, they believed in themselves. For Donna she reevaluated her skills and got a different door to open. In Marcy’s case, she worked her network and eventually one of her assignments lead to a permanent job.
