Dear Parents, 5 Tips for Class of 2020

The Job Search Check List

Dear Parents, Before you know it, the class of 2020 will be on the job market and actively (we hope) involved in a job search. Here is a checklist to pass on to your student so they will not need to come back home and live in your basement!

Frankly, they should be thinking and preparing right now! The recruiting season may be in progress right now depending on their majors. For corporations, government agencies, and education-related opportunities; the recruiting season might begin six to seven months in advance of their May graduation date.

Here is the Chrystal Nova Check List:

  • Visit Career Services now! Do not wait until April to learn about the services and opportunities available through the center. Companies and organizations contact the career office to list job opportunities, participate in career fairs, or sponsor on-site visits to their company.
  • Make sure the resume is in tip-top shape. It should highlight the skills, accomplishments, and campus activities. Visit career services for a resume review.
  • LinkedIn Profiles are an important part of the job search process. Students will need these in addition to the resume. The profile is also an excellent way to network with other professionals.
  • Begin researching and targeting employers who are consistent with their career goals.
  • If they are clueless about their career direction, begin talking with alumni who might be able to provide some advice.
  • Use the December/January break to do some serious strategizing for the job hunt.
