Interviewing During COVID Times: 5-Tips to Get You Started – Part 2

You now know how to look and sound your best on Zoom. Now the real test is before you: acing the interview!

Before the interview, be sure you have done the following:

  1. Google the interviewer or recruiter so that you have a little knowledge of the title, position in the company, and professional background.
  2. Research the company/organization and note their mission, values, services or products. You should have an idea of how the organization sees itself and how the position for which you are interviewing fits into the organization.
  3. Contact an employee of the organization that you might know to learn additional information about the work environment or other relevant information. LinkedIn is a great way to find people you know at an organization.
  4.  Sign in to Zoom at least 5 minutes before your scheduled interview time. Calm and center yourself so you can be at your best. It is much better to be early than late!
  5. What kinds of interviews might you encounter? These are several types of interviews that you might come across:
    • Behavioral: This kind of interview is designed to determine how the applicant will act in certain employment-related situations. An interviewer might ask for an example of a time when you had to deliver bad news to an employee, or for when and how you successfully completed a project with a particularly tight deadline.
    • Situational: This is similar to a behavioral interview. Interviewees will be asked questions about how they handled particular situations at work.
    • Group or Panel: A candidate is interviewed by more than one person at the same time. You might be interviewed by a senior leadership team, or an academic department.
    • Case: A candidate is given a detailed problem and asked to analyze it and find a solution. Case interviews are common in consulting.

Each of these kinds of interviews requires different preparation, so it’s helpful to know the type of interview you might undergo. Preparation is the key to success! Glassdoor.com offers a section on company interviews, where applicants post the kinds of questions they were asked.
