Five Tips to Update and Modernize Your Resume

Maybe you’ve worked at the same company in the same job for many years, so you haven’t needed to update your resume. Maybe you’re a new graduate so you do not have a resume at all! You’re not even sure what should go in a resume.

Here is your 2021 guide to help  you write your modern resume. The following 5 tips will help you get started.

  1. Contact information has changed. In most cases you do not need to add your full address. Your city, state and zip code are sufficient.
  2. Be sure to have a separate email for job hunting that is professional. Emails such as Babysis@hotmail.com  or SimplyFabulous@yahoo.com should be avoided. Additionally, many baby boomers have Hotmail accounts.  This tends to tip off the reader that you are of a different generation. This is one place you can de-age your resume. A simple Gmail address with a version of your name is sufficient: “firstname.lastname@gmail.com,” for example.
  3. Include your LinkedIn profile in your contact information. If you do not have one, establish one (I can teach you how to do this!). Employers review your profile as a screening mechanism. Make sure it tells a compelling story – and make sure your LinkedIn profile is complete and up to date.
  4. The “Objective” is now out and replaced by Headlines. Headlines tell the reader the position(s) you seek, the industry, and the supporting skills you offer. These can be modified in a Word document. This is called customizing, tailoring or targeting your resume to a particular position.
  5. While the Executive Summary, Summary or Profile is still a welcome addition to the resume, you do not need to use this wording. Simply put the summary after the headlines.
  6. Consider a Skills and Capabilities Section. This allows you to put those critical “keywords” in your resume that the ATS (applicant tracking system) is looking for.
  7. Make sure your resume highlights accomplishments. They answer the question, “What is unique and different about you?” It is not enough to just list your responsibilities.
  8. Gone are the days that you have a resume with 10 – 12 bullet items for each role. Stick to a maximum of 5 bullets.
  9. It is okay to bold, underline or use italics. In the past this was a no-no.
  10. Judiciously use color. Color draws the reader’s eye to certain portions of the resume and makes for an attractive document.
  11. Finally, in most cases a 1 or 2 page resume is the rule. If you have questions, contact Chrystal Nova for help with your resume.  ………chrystal@chrystalnova.com.
